Also a maps app that superimposes information about what you are looking at onto the screen which shows realtime video taken from the camera. It would have buildings [name, room-numbers in different floors/sections of the buildings, what classes are going on], events [sales, concerts, club events), location and/or time based reminders about due dates (if it can be synced with connect). It would have real-time video mode as well as a more conventional 2d map but the real-time superposition would be the real groundbreaker. UBC doesn’t really have a fully functional interactive map and I think, with our team, we could build an exceptional service.
To create an open-sourced system of sharing class notes, tentatively called UNote. UNote would be an app that is setup somewhat like an App Store. It would have an icon for the top rated notes, one for the top rated note-taker, one for faculty then subject and then course breakdowns of notes and one for updates to the courses that you are subscribed to. The app would be available on all major app stores and would require a (hopefully) one time login using CWL. Both students and professors would upload their notes, either from the desktop application or from the mobile app, to their specific class. The notes could then be downloaded by anyone with a CWL login. There would also be a (possibly semi-mandatory) 5-star rating system for the notes. You may have to rate a certain percentage of notes that you download, it would be a non-intrusive rating system. The first time that you leave a note that you are viewing, a dialogue box would come up with 5 outlined stars and you would rate it (or say remind me later/never). This would quickly give weight to the top notes section and would provide students with a viable alternative to using the professor’s notes and might even drive professors to produce competitive notes. UNote will be 100% free. However, note-uploaders would have the option to set up a tip-receiving account where anyone can tip the note-taker for an especially good set of notes. Given large class sizes, it is likely that the top note-uploader for each class would get a sizeable amount of tips. The app may be add supported, or it may take a small amount (say 5% off of each tip). In addition to text notes, images and audio/visual recordings will hopefully be supported. We believe that this app will make the student experience much better as a whole as they will have the choice to supplement their own notes with other notes. Some users may even find that they learn better through active participation and total focus during lecture and just reviewing someone else’s notes. Exceptional note-takers will have a significant incentive to upload their notes.

Project Proposal:
Degree Mapper helps students determine course requirements for various programs and degrees with ease and simplicity. There is often a great deal of ambiguity around what courses are required for a particular program leading to confusion, stress, improperly selected courses and long wait times for UBC advising. Degree Mapper gives students a clear way to chart their degree and connect with the resources they need to ensure academic success.
Lost on your first day? Wish you knew where your friends were? Need to organize a meeting? UBCme will be designed to help students organize and simplify their university experience with their smartphone or tablet. UBCme will allow students to easily view their timetables, compare and share them with friends, organize lunchtime and study group meetings, and navigate between classes. With the rise of social media, seamless Facebook integration allows for a streamlined sharing experience. Students can share their timetable with their Facebook friends or post it to their Facebook timeline or groups. Don’t have a lunch buddy? UBCme will allow you to overlay schedules of two or more friends and produce a calendar view or list of non-conflicting blocks of time. Can’t find your class? Students can tap on a class name in their timetable view for directions to their class. With the possibility for additional features such as automatic grade notification, large-scale meeting organization, and a textbook marketplace, we are excited about the potential UBCme has for the students of UBC!

Project Proposal:
Put the student calendar into a mobile web app so students can easily access and review their course schedule on their phone. Better yet, tie it into the student portal so their calendar is associated with their account.
